Not only did they rule out wm's efforts in
the past but they discouraged girls for the
future. Each time a wman first entered a sphere
that men considered as their private field, it
arouse the same hostility

Medicine: when the first woman to become a doctor
around 1930, received her diploma in a public
ceremony in Paris, the famous Dr Charcot, far
from congratulating her, said: "Now has come
the time of female doctors ! their claims are
outrageous ! They are contrary to Nature' laws
and contrary to aesthetics."

As for Sports, same reaction: when Pierre de
Coubertin restored the Olympic games around 1930
he required that no woman should enter a stadium.
Female olympics, said he, are unthinkable. they
would be unfeasible, unaesthetic and incorrect".

I would also like to say a few
words about a very hypocrit and modern way
of discouraging women's progress: it is in France
refusing to use the feminine gender to designate
them. I am still involved in a fight to change
things, since 1984, when I became Preste of a
Committee founded by our min. for wmn's
Rights, Yvette Roudy. we worked in order to
propose feminine forms for the new trades
practised by women.
